How Parkinson\u2019s Might Affect Our Vision, Depth Perception, and Spatial Awareness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re riding in a car, and suddenly a vehicle in front of you slows down\u2014or one zooms past you\u2014and it feels like it appeared out of nowhere. You startle. Your heart jumps. You flinch so hard the driver freaks out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, this happens much more when I\u2019m a passenger<\/strong> than when I\u2019m driving. It\u2019s like my brain wasn\u2019t expecting something to happen, so when it does, I overreact. I hadn\u2019t really thought about it until I visited the Shaikh Parkinson\u2019s research lab at the Cleveland VA<\/a><\/strong> last week and spoke with Dr. Aasef Shaikh<\/a><\/strong>, a movement disorder specialist and Parkinson’s researcher and one of his research fellows studying how Parkinson\u2019s affects the way we see and interpret the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shaikh’s lab<\/a> made me think of Back to the Future\u2014as if Doc Brown had ditched the DeLorean to help Marty McFly battle Parkinson\u2019s instead of time travel. It\u2019s full of all sorts of cool motion capture gadgets and eye-tracking machines. Dr. Shaikh is just as passionate about finding the solutions, often sharing his ideas in a way that assumes I am smart enough to keep up with all the thoughts and ideas going through his head. I loved it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc41\ufe0f Parkinson\u2019s May Change How the Brain \u201cSees\u201d the World<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shaikh explained that in people with Parkinson\u2019s, the brain may rely more on what it expects to see<\/strong> than what it\u2019s actually seeing through the eyes in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means your brain might \u201cautopilot\u201d through a familiar scene\u2014until something unexpected appears, like a car passing or a sudden stop. The result? You\u2019re startled, thrown off, and your body reacts late or incorrectly. He\u2019s currently exploring whether deep brain stimulation (DBS)<\/strong> might help correct this mismatch between sensory input and brain expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udeaa Freezing, Doorways, and Optical Flow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to visual misinterpretation and startle responses, Dr. Shaikh\u2019s research also made me think about something else many of us with Parkinson\u2019s experience: freezing of gait<\/strong>, especially at thresholds like doorways or narrow spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This might be related to something called optical flow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf00 What is Optical Flow?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optical flow refers to the way our brain processes movement through space based on how visual information flows across our field of vision. When you walk forward, for example, the environment appears to move past you in the opposite direction\u2014walls, door frames, furniture all shift across your retina in a predictable way. This flow helps your brain determine speed, direction, and spatial orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udeab When Optical Flow Gets Disrupted<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In people with Parkinson\u2019s, this system can misfire. The brain may struggle to interpret visual motion correctly, especially during transitions\u2014like walking through a doorway. Your eyes are telling you one thing, but your brain doesn\u2019t process the information fast enough or accurately enough. The result? Your body hesitates. You freeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s as if your internal GPS loses signal for a moment\u2014you\u2019re still moving, but your brain isn\u2019t sure how<\/em> or where<\/em> to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is especially true when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
