That\u2019s outdated thinking. Shortly after I was diagnosed, a physician told me I shouldn\u2019t run anymore because I was a \u201cfall risk.\u201d For years, that was standard advice: minimize risk by minimizing activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But today, we know better. <strong>Exercise is essential.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when it comes to fall prevention, two things are key: <strong>balance<\/strong> and <strong>core strength<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s often leads to a stooped posture that shifts our center of gravity forward. This makes us less stable and more prone to falls\u2014especially as we move. It\u2019s like a muscle\u2014<strong>it gets stronger with practice<\/strong>. The good news is that you <em>can<\/em> improve it. Regularly challenging your balance in a safe, progressive way makes a real difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first in a series of articles with exercises that you can do at home to decrease your risk of falling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udcda The Science Behind the Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A growing body of research shows that exercise isn\u2019t just helpful\u2014it may actually slow the progression of Parkinson\u2019s disease. In particular, <strong>core and balance training<\/strong> improve posture, mobility, and confidence in daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong core = a more stable center of gravity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better balance = fewer falls, more freedom<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2020 study published in <em>Parkinsonism &amp; Related Disorders<\/em> found that individuals with Parkinson\u2019s who practiced balance-focused exercises for 12 weeks significantly improved their postural control and reduced fall risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2705 Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need fancy equipment or an athletic background.
