Because of our shared interest in addressing the opioid crisis and the devastating impact of fentanyl, I want to let you know about legislative action I will join to combat this ongoing crisis.

I have seen firsthand the impact drugs, such as fentanyl, can have on our communities and my own family.\u00a0 Highly addictive and deadly drugs are tearing apart lives and families, overwhelming law enforcement, and placing a strain on our healthcare systems.\u00a0 I believe in prioritizing stronger drug enforcement, prevention efforts, and access to treatment to combat this crisis and save lives.<\/p>
In 2023, over 107,000 people died of a drug overdose, nearly 70 percent of which were caused by fentanyl.\u00a0 That is why the HALT Fentanyl Act, when it passed the House on February 6, 2025, by a 312-108 vote.\u00a0 This bill would permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, subjecting them to strict regulatory controls and penalties.\u00a0 This bill would also streamline research registration requirements for Schedule I substances, allowing for simplified site registrations, reduced inspections, and limited manufacturing activities by researchers.\u00a0 Please know that I will continue to advocate for this impactful change to be signed into law.<\/p>
